Dear LEAD Elementary School Parents, Guardians and Families,
We have been in school just 16 days and have experienced an eclipse, our new digital marquee, a successful earthquake evacuation drill, welcomed 109 new families to LEAD, enjoyed the first Principal/PTA Coffee Chat with over 70 in attendance, and met our new PTA Board who explained their vision and membership goals that they have set for themselves as viable and meaningful partners in the education of our children. Teachers welcomed families to our 2017 Back to School Night and have had 3 staff meetings, completed their web pages on our web site, LEAD.smfcsd.net, planned and implemented their daily schedules that include 2 hour balanced literacy blocks, mathematical instruction with critical thinking, problem solving, and counting collections at the early grades, social studies, science, and designated ELD. As lifelong learners our teachers and your Principal attended our first day of several days of training in our newly adopted English/language arts resource, Benchmark Advanced. BMA was specifically developed based on the current California E/LA framework and marries well with our training over the last 5 years in the Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop model. Our teacher leaders across our District chose this curricular resource for its rigor, opportunities for scaffolding (differentiating instruction) balanced literacy, opportunities for meaningful assessment, and are both integrated and designated ELD components. One component is the “Read Aloud.” Reading aloud to students is an important way to engage them in text that is more challenging than they can read independently while they are developing as readers. We are growing our young minds to read, think and write critically and to have this resource at our fingertips is most amazing. We’ve also scheduled PE, Music, Library and are working on continuing Digital Literacy/Arts Integration at all grade levels as Ms. Howell partners with teachers to plan grade level appropriate opportunities.
Thank you for partnering with us as we strive to ensure both academic and social emotional success for all of our students. We have noticed a dramatic increase in students being at school for the first instructional bell at 8:00. I will continue to monitor the parking lot for safety and encourage parents to drop off before the first Instructional bell rings at 8:00. That way our children are in their classrooms and learning as part of the morning routines as opposed to hurrying through the classroom door, rushing to get materials ready and catch up, rather than being “ahead of the game.” Our teachers have worked diligently to structure their daily schedules to maximize learning time. They need your cooperation in consistently getting your children to school on time and ensuring their presence unless they are home with an illness that warrants an excused absence.
Here/s what’s happening as we continue our journey through September. We welcome your participation and involvement!
Monday September 11th: Welcome to our Reading Buddies (community volunteers) who will begin their reading partnerships with our first and second graders this week.
