Dear LEAD Families and Community,
Welcome back from Spring Break and a special welcome back to Norma Ochoa our most amazing PIP leader. It just hasn’t been the same without her. Many thanks to Renee Skinner who helped out so much while Norma was out. Also, please welcome Shiela Ashtiani who will be taking over in room 18 for Ms. Slater who is on maternity leave!
Here we are in April, a busy month with so much planned for our school and our community of learners. April is National Autism Awareness Month! To celebrate and spread awareness, please come by the office to see the beautiful bulletin board recognizing our Autistic students and showcasing what they CAN do! We will also be celebrating as an entire school with Ms. Howell reading a children's book about autism to all classes this first week after spring break. Also, some of our regular education students have put together facts about autism that will be shared on our KOWL broadcast each Monday of April. Each classroom will also have a coin box and stickers; please encourage your children to collect coins to put in the box all month. All money will go to Autism Speaks and used to further autism awareness. Thank you for participating in this worthwhile cause!
Professional Development is at the forefront of all we are accomplishing as a school. Congratulations to Doris Yoon and Felicia Howell who were accepted into the Digital Literacy Institute at Teachers’ College at Columbia University in New York. They will be attending with me for 4 days in April and we are so excited to bring back our new learnings to share with our school community. Congrats as well to Angela Kollerer (K), Andrea Quinn TK, and Elisabeth Glikbarg, K who have been accepted into the week long Reading/ Writing Institutes at Teachers’ College Columbia University. This week we also have 6 upper grade teachers attending a workshop on the teaching of “Close Reading” in the upper grades. Kate Roberts, a teacher trainer from Columbia is in town leading the workshop. We appreciate our District’s support in all of these endeavors!
Although there are only 3 weeks left in April, there’s a lot going on!
-- Wednesday, April 13th visiting author Lauren Tarshis will be talking with our upper grade students about her writing experiences and books! Thanks to Felicia Howell and the Reading Bug for this enriching opportunity!
-- Thursday, April 14th will be our District-Wide disaster drill where we practice all of our safety training with the entire student body and staff with participation District wide.
-- Tuesday, April 19th 7:00PM: Please join us for a meeting at Bayside Gym, Multi Use room for a meeting with our District and City to plan for and discuss city code amendments which would allow us to install our wonderful new electronic marquee, planned and designed with our wonderful PTA during our rebranding efforts. We hope you can join us to speak up for this important visual for the front of our school! There is a picture of the new marquee in the face case outside of the LEAD office.
-- Tuesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 28 are California Science Standards testing for all of our 5th graders.
This is a pencil and paper test, not done on the computer as are the Smarter Balanced Tests for grades 3-5 in May. 5th graders will take the science tests in the morning on those two days. Parents can help us by ensuring their children are well rested (at least 10 hours of sleep) and have a healthy breakfast before coming to school. Thank you for your support in this!
-- Wednesday, April 27th is our April Principal Parent Coffee Chat in conjunction with PTA and PIP. Our 5th grade teachers will be presenting and parents will be asked to complete a survey for our LCAP planning for 2016-2017. Mrs. Correa will also update parents on the May SBAC testing and Mrs. Howell will do a brief training Round 2 on our new web site. Please be sure to bring a smart phone and we will also have digital devices available for those who need them for the training and the survey.
-- Friday, April 29th: Bayside Buddy day for our 5th graders and Earth Day Tree Planting Celebrations at 8:10 with many of our student leaders at Shoreview Park!
Thank you all for your continued support!
